ESLI Congratulates Iraq on Re-Opening of National Museum in Baghdad

The European Shoah Legacy Institute congratulates Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi, the Iraqi Government, and the Iraqi Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on the re-opening of the Iraq Museum in Baghdad on 28th February 2015.

The Iraq Museum suffered significant looting during the numerous periods of unrest in Iraq over the past twenty years, with over 15,000 objects being looted following the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Although only 5000 items were ever recovered, the re-opening of the national museum is testament to the dedication and commitment of the Iraqi Government to the protection and preservation of Mesopotamian cultural heritage, and stands in sharp contrast to the barbaric destruction of cultural artifacts in Mosul by Islamic State militants.
